How to find new UK companies on Companies House

Every UK company that incorporates goes on a public register the same week. If you sell to new businesses, that register tells you who to ring. This page is how to get that list yourself, free, and where the free routes stop being worth the afternoon.

1. Advanced search, in five minutes

Open Companies House advanced search. It is the public search, with filters, and it needs no account.

• Set incorporation date From and To. For last month, that is the 1st to the last day of the month.
• Set company status to Active, or you will collect companies that have already been struck off.
• Put your area in registered office address. It is a free-text box, so a postcode district such as EX4 or a town name behaves as a partial match on the address as filed.
• Add nature of business if you only want one trade. That field takes SIC codes, and the SIC code list is where you look them up.
• Download the results as a spreadsheet. Companies House states the export holds up to 5,000 companies.

That is a real list of real companies, for nothing. For one town and one trade it is often all you need.

2. What advanced search cannot do

There is no county filter and no postcode field. The address box matches text, so “Devon” misses a Plymouth company whose filed address never says Devon, and a postcode district means running the search once per district.

SIC codes are the other catch. A company can file up to 4, plumbers file under several different codes, and the codes are chosen by whoever registered the company. One search per code, then de-duplicate.

So the honest cost of doing a whole county by hand is not five minutes. It is one search per postcode district, times one per trade you care about, every month, forever.

3. The monthly bulk file, if you want everything

Companies House publishes the whole register as a free download at the company data product page. It is a ZIP of CSV data, published within 5 working days of each month end, either as one file of roughly 469 MB or as 7 smaller parts.

It holds every live company, not only the new ones, and it has no incorporation-date filter. You need a tool that can filter several million rows, which rules out opening it in a spreadsheet. This is the file we load ourselves, once a month.

4. The API, if you write code

The Companies House public data API is free and needs a registered key. The documented limit is 600 requests in any 5 minute period, and it returns 429 above that.

It has an advanced search endpoint that takes an incorporation date range, so a script can walk a month day by day. Expect to spend an evening on it, and expect to maintain it when the register changes shape.

5. What is not in any of it

No email addresses and no phone numbers: the register holds neither. Officer names and service addresses are published, but a micro-company is often registered at a director’s home, which is why we strip everything below postcode district and keep no personal data at all.

Whatever route you take, contacting a company you found on the register is your call under your own marketing obligations. A public register is not a list of people who asked to hear from you.

6. What we sell, and when it is the better trade

We do steps 3 and 4 once a month and cut the result into slices. A pack is every company incorporated in the trailing 30 days in one county and one of 10 sectors, as a CSV and an XLSX, with £29 the price for one county and one sector. The run on the site now covers 2 August 2026 to 31 August 2026.

You could do this yourself in an afternoon. It is £29 not to. Do it yourself when you want one town, one trade, once. Pay us when you want a whole county every month and you know you will not sit down and do it.

The free part of ours stays free either way: each of our 69 county pages shows the current count, the sector breakdown, the busiest towns and the first 10 rows, with no email asked for. If the count is what you were after, take it and go.

7. How current any of this is

Advanced search and the API are live, so they are current to the minute. The bulk file is monthly, and so are our packs: every page here states the window and the snapshot it came from. If our snapshot goes stale we pause sales rather than sell an old file.
